As many of you are aware – and have voiced your opinion about – both Chris Jones and Julie Krasniak of Rapha Focus Racing demonstrated their super pro skills to take the 2011 title of Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships. Unfortunately – and much to the surprise of us as organizers and you, as race participants – both also chose to forgo the ultimate prize for winning, that being the privilege of receiving a SSCXWC championship tattoo. We were certainly caught off guard at this cough, weak sauce, cough, outcome as we considered there to be two, and only two, rules of SSCXW:
- 1. Race a singlespeed
- 2. Get the tattoo if you win
Now, we know that the other 468 of you who raced on that famed Sunday in Golden Gate Park would have shot your hands up like overeager 5th graders yearning to be called on in class if given the opportunity to receive the SSCXWC tattoo (that is, if you were victorious as were Chris and Julie). Our only precedent for this lack of tattooity is Barry Wick’s similar dodge after winning the 2007 SSCXWC. Faced with the same situation this year – but in what has seemed a much more visible forum, thanks in part to the Interwebs – we were forced to think long and hard, hem and haw, consult the race founders and go back and forth, and back and forth, and yes, back and forth, with Chris and Julie themselves.
And so, we’ve come to two, and only two, conclusions:
1. Chris and Julie are allowed to keep their Singlespeed Cyclocross World Champion titles. But as is tradition, they will be banned from future SSCXWC races until they receive and present their SSCXWC tattoos. Frankly, we think this means we won’t be seeing them at our sick little twisted race again.
2. Going forward, we will set expectations accordingly so as to avoid future disappointments. In other words, we will make it obvious as fuck from here forward that there are two, and only two rules, to SSCXWC.
See you next year in Santa Cruz, bitches.

there should be an addendum, get the tattoo before the awards ceremony
Julie is hot. She should be allowed to return, with or without tattoo. Who cares about Chris?
relagate. cool vid.
really? they get to keep their title? wow. that is awful. they didn’t even stay for the ceremonies. Definitely not the right outcome. C’mon guys. This one was a no brainer.
Respect lost.
Rules be rules
Ahh, the culture of conformity. Conform to our culture of perceived non-conformity or you can’t play. I declare this scene dead.
“culture of perceived non-conformity” really? I say not. It is supposed to be an honor, a tradition. Not something you scoff at and say meh. I’ve never been to a sscxwc, but it still pisses me off that hacks poach a scene as what appears to be a marketing foff.
lololol grow up
Never has a unorganized, unofficial, of no real consequence race mattered to more people than this one . . . Chris & Julie from Rapha should race again with masks, like a pair of SSCX Zorros, and steal the title again, while smacking the self-importance out your mouths with a quick whip of their skinny arms.
It was already obvious as fuck.
fuck them for evening showing up. Rapha blows and I am now currently keeping warm next to my rapha clothing fire. I agree Julie is good looking but still lame. Adam Craig is a pro but he still got the tat at SSWC but hey Adam is the man. I hope Chris reads this cuz man you are uber lame. Lame, its not conformity its tradition. Just like the last stage of tour de france, not a real rule just the way shit has always been.
getting it wrong over and over again.

You are all just pissed some geared bike riders came in and put the hammer down.
