More SSCXWC Love from Cycling Utah

As many of you are aware – and have voiced your opinion about – both Chris Jones and Julie Krasniak of Rapha Focus Racing demonstrated their super pro skills to take the 2011 title of Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships. Unfortunately – and much to the surprise of us as organizers and you, as race participants – both also chose to forgo the ultimate prize for winning, that being the privilege of receiving a SSCXWC championship tattoo. We were certainly caught off guard at this cough, weak sauce, cough, outcome as we considered there to be two, and only two, rules of SSCXW:
Now, we know that the other 468 of you who raced on that famed Sunday in Golden Gate Park would have shot your hands up like overeager 5th graders yearning to be called on in class if given the opportunity to receive the SSCXWC tattoo (that is, if you were victorious as were Chris and Julie). Our only precedent for this lack of tattooity is Barry Wick’s similar dodge after winning the 2007 SSCXWC. Faced with the same situation this year – but in what has seemed a much more visible forum, thanks in part to the Interwebs – we were forced to think long and hard, hem and haw, consult the race founders and go back and forth, and back and forth, and yes, back and forth, with Chris and Julie themselves.
And so, we’ve come to two, and only two, conclusions:
1. Chris and Julie are allowed to keep their Singlespeed Cyclocross World Champion titles. But as is tradition, they will be banned from future SSCXWC races until they receive and present their SSCXWC tattoos. Frankly, we think this means we won’t be seeing them at our sick little twisted race again.
2. Going forward, we will set expectations accordingly so as to avoid future disappointments. In other words, we will make it obvious as fuck from here forward that there are two, and only two rules, to SSCXWC.
See you next year in Santa Cruz, bitches.

Hats off to Bay Area local Jenny Oh Hatfield, who did a fine job of telling the story of a thousand words for this weekend with just one image. From Saturday’s qualifier at Ocean Beach.
